Drive by The Cars was released on July 23, 1984, with Stranger Eyes as the B side. It was the third single from the album Heartbeat City. Written by Cars vocalist Ric Ocasek, the track was sung by bassist Benjamin Orr.

The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming The Cars’ highest charting single in the United States. It reached No. 4 on the UK Singles chart and was a top 10 hit in several other countries.

Watch the music video for the song, which was directed by Timothy Hutton and starred Ocasek’s future wife Paulina Porizkova.

Also released on this day in the 1980s: Into the Groove by Madonna in 1985; You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi in 1986; and Love Walks In by Van Halen in 1986.
