80s Song of the Day: Take My Breath Away by Berlin

Take My Breath Away by Berlin was released on June 15, 1986, with Radar Radio as the B side. It was a single from the Top Gun soundtrack and also appeared on Berlin’s fourth studio album, Count Three & Pray.

take my breath awayThe song was a No. 1 hit in several countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. It went on to win an Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

Take My Breath Away was originally offered to fellow new wavers The Motels; they released their original demo of the song on their compilation album Anthologyland. Lead singer Martha Davis wrote the following in the liner notes: “I got a call from Giorgio [Moroder, who co-wrote the song] … ‘Hey Martha, I would like you to sing on this song’ and he sent over a cassette of ‘Take My Breath Away.’ I don’t consider myself very A&R-ish but when I heard it I said, ‘damn, that’s a hit!’ I went in and sang the song, but then, Terri [Nunn, lead singer of Berlin] ended up doing it and having it featured in Top Gun. There’s a big part of me that is glad that I didn’t do it because I’m a writer and I think I would have been known more for that song than any other.”
