girls on filmThe song was Duran Duran’s first Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it didn’t chart upon its initial released. It would later become popular in the U.S. after the music video received heavy airplay on MTV and after Duran Duran was reissued there, following the success of Rio.

The music video for Girls on Film was banned by the BBC for raunchy content, and a heavily edited version was played on MTV. In March 1983, Video 45 for Girls on Film and Hungry Like the Wolf  was released in the United States. The VHS format contained the edited “day version” of the Girls on Film video, while the Betamax format contained the original uncensored “night version.” The Video 45 won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video in 1984.
